Flood Inundation Maps for the Deerfield River

The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with FEMA develop flood-inundation maps for the Deerfield River in and nearby Charlemont for a 9.1 mile section from the confluence with Cold Brook downstream to Clesson Brook. The flood-inundation maps are for 15 different river stages from 8.7 to 25.7 ft. These maps cover river stages that are from about bankfull to the 0.2-percent annual exceedance probability (500-year flood) flood flows. The maps are web-based and allow the user to toggle between different flood stages, zoom to particular areas or address, and view the inundated extent and click on the maps and get the approximate flood depths.

The availability of the flood-inundation maps at water.usgs.gov, combined with information regarding current (near real-time) stage from the USGS Deerfield River at Charlemont streamgage (01168500) in the study reach, can provide emergency management personnel and residents with information to aid in flood response activities, such as evacuations and road closures, and with postflood recovery efforts. The flood-inundation maps are nonregulatory, but provide Federal, State, and local agencies and the public with estimates of the potential extent of flooding during selected peak-flow events
